Mikkel Metal
The work of Copenhagen-based Mikkel Meldgaard AKA Mikkel Metal is perhaps best described as subtly singular. In a musical landscape that’s diversifying at the speed of light and has the digital hype machine churning out new genre tags in an effort to keep up with the rapid stylistic developments, Mikkel Metal keeps refining and expanding his discerning strain of eclectic, dub-influenced techno to no small amount of critical acclaim and informed praise. There’s a rare kind of understated, enduring integrity to Mikkel’s music that just seems to deepen and amplify as the years go by. Hence, we wouldn’t be surprised if Mikkel Metal essentials such as the mighty ‘Victmizer’ album (2006) on kompakt stands the test of time by becoming a mainstay in playlists of future generations of beat fetishists.
Interestingly, it was the guitar that first sparked Mikkel’s interest in music and instilled in him his heightened sense of nuance and atmosphere. After years of fanning out over melancholic My Bloody Valentine-influenced shoegaze and Pavement-inspired lo-fi rock, he subsequently tired of the complexities involved in playing in a band and progressed to the sampler somewhere in his mid-twenties. Concurrently with the completion of his degree in Philosophy from the University of Copenhagen, the great Dane took his first steps into what has become a rather distinguished career in electronic music by putting out his first 7” on the German Hal9000 label. Since those determining days, Mikkel has put out an impressive string of quality releases on the Danish Echocord label, the renowned Cologne-based Kompakt label and now, of course, we’re both proud and pleased to have Mikkel join the Tartelet family for his upcoming EP.
